Lesson 2: adaptation and diversity of living organisms

Background

Introduction to diversity of animals when you visit the zoo
You may see the animals and you observe the varity among these animals in a lot of different characteristics such as the shape and the way of feeding
Living organisms depended on each other in the environment where they live in.
 Evolution of Life
The diversity of life on Earth today is the result of evolution. Life began on Earth at least 4 billion years ago, and it has been evolving ever since. At first, all living things on Earth were simple, single-celled organisms. Much later, the first multicellular organisms evolved, and after that, Earth’s biodiversity greatly increased.
Today, scientists accept the evolution of life on Earth as a fact. There is too much evidence supporting evolution to doubt it. However, that wasn’t always the case.

Lesson objectives
At the end of the lesson , students should be able to
1- Student should be able to identify the adaptation cocept
2- The sudent should be able to countable the reasons of diversity of living organisms
3- Students show the difference between camel's limbs and horse's limbs
4- The sudent should be able to explain the task of camel pad ends in a thick flat one
5- the student should be able to observe realationship between adaptation and motion in mammels
6-  Student identifies about Structural(anatomical) adaptation
7-         Student explains   what does it meant by behavioural adaptation
8- Student deduces the importance of some shapes of modification of living organisms
9- The student discusses relationship between the adaptation and motion in mammals
10- The student predict some shapes of modification of living organism
11- Student estimates the greatness of Allah in the variation of creatures

Students' prior knowledge :
Before the lesson students should able to:
1-   Explain what is meant by Extintion
Some living organisms couldn't adapt to the environmental changes so they pershid.
Ex : Dinosaurs – Mammoth

2-   Students count some forms of adaptation of living  organisms such as birds migration ,hiding in the winter for some animals .

Concepts:

1-   Adaptation: It is a modification of aliving organism's behaviour , body structure or organs biological functions to become more adapted to
the environmental conditions where it lives in.

2-   Structural adaptation
3-   Functional adaptation

   Learning resources

some photos for different kinds of animals and living
organisms

Display the video that indicate the adaptation and the
motion in mammel's

content:
Camel pad ends in athick flat one .Horse hoof ends in astrong solid
Camel’s  limbs
Camel pad ends in thick flat one to enable the camel wandering through the hot
Horse's limbs :
Horse hoof ends in astrong solid end
To help the horse go through the rocky soil

Mammal's limb's are modified in many shapes and forms to suit the required ways of movement such as : Walking , flying , swimming ,
it is an adaptation that studies the structure of one body organ ex: the horses 's hoof structure the camel's pad structure
it is adaptation in the activity of some animals in different times of the daylight  ex: birds migration at certain times of the year Activity of birds during the daylight and bats at night
Bats the two forelimbs are modified into   two wings-like structure
The way of movement for
Whales(Swimming and diving), Bats are flying and Horse running on the rocky soil
Whales, Dolphins, sea lion
the two forelimbs are modified to become paddles (fin-like structure

Teacher's demonstration material :

Power point Slides-
Quick-time Video
Worksheet
White board
Markers

Set induction :
The lesson begins with worksheet distributed to each pair of students which looks like aquiz
1- How many cycles of the backbone of the snake?
……………………………………………….
2- Why do the fish sleep and his eyes wide open ?
…………………………………………………

3- Record the names of some animals which active in daytime?
…………………………………………………...
4- Record the names of some animals which active in the night?

Assessments

1-   Mention the causes of adaptation in animals :

…………………………………………………………………………………..
…………………………………………………………………………………..

2-   complete the following statements :
a – Types of adaptation are structural ,…………….and …………
b – Horse's limbs end in ………… to run over rocky soil , whereas camel's limbs end in ………… to walk on hot sandy soil .
c – The whale's front limbs are modified into ………. To take the role of …….
Whereas they are modified in the bat into ………. To take the role of …………
